I’m getting tired of Americans talking about leaving the US if Trump gets reelected. Not because I don’t understand the sentiment, trust me I do, but because to me it’s so Western and entitled to think that you can just up and go somewhere.
I immigrated twice in my life, both times to entirely different languages and cultures. Nobody wants you there, you’re not God’s gift to that new country – it has its own citizens to take care of and it doesn’t need more of the same.
First time I moved as a child my parents prepared for years. Second time I moved as an adult I prepared for years too. You need to have skills the country needs, you need to have a job ready for you, a plan. You can’t just do nothing and once Trump gets re-elected knock on Canada’s proverbial door and have them accept you with open arms. Canada’s immigration system is more harsh than the US one!
What’s more, people who lived in the same country for generations have zero idea how much nobody wants you there when you immigrate. You think they hate immigrants here? They hate them everywhere. They never let you forget you’re foreign. Your kids will be outcasts in some shape or form everywhere they go and the feeling of rejection will stick with them.
And god, did I have to bite my tongue when my white American acquaintances complained to me about Trump’s sanctions on immigration. It didn’t touch them in the least, *I* had to spend countless hours figuring out my situation and live in constant fear of my Visa being rejected. But hey, their soft white middle-class souls were hurt by the idea of someone being mistreated. They didn’t really or anything, God no, that would be too much work.
I don’t like where this country is going politically and I do hope the next president will be better, but it’s still a thousand times better than where I previously lived and I love it here. I tell people I love it here a lot and maybe it annoys them because as an immigrant I should be all huffy that the government hates me, but I’m not. I don’t plan on ever getting benefits, I pay my taxes, and I will work as hard as I have to, so one day the government will like me regardless
