Seriously, guys. I’m working, I’m a nurse, I’m *your* nurse, and telling me that you’re going to have sweet dreams about me makes me so uncomfortable.
I work with a population that you need to have clear boundaries with, and they often seem to think that my niceness is an invitation to call me sweetheart or love or honey. I’m being nice because I’m your nurse and I care about you. It’s hard to figure out what to say to discourage the behavior when it’s not blatant. Sometimes I call patients ‘Hon’ by accident, it just slips out, and I know that it’s a bad habit in nursing these days to use that kind of language. In most instances it’s easy to say ‘hey now I’m at work!’ and it’s good. But those grey-area little comments don’t warrant as much of a reaction, I guess. I need my patients to trust me, but I also need them to treat me with respect.
