Having suffered from depression for many years, I think I am qualified to write this post/vent.
I am so happy to this a massive wave at the moment to tell people to talk, speak out about how they are feeling, not to be ashamed at having dark thoughts etc. The fact that people like the young Royals are heading many of these awareness days proves that mental health can affect everyone, anyone, all ages, classes, races and religions. It’s not that picky.
So, what am I venting about? Well, its all very well getting people to stand up and say, ‘Help me, please someone help me’, that takes courage. However, once they have said this, where is the help? All resources are so overstretched, waiting lists to see a counsellor are long, and going privately is not an option for many due to funds. It’s actually placing people in a dire state. They’ve had the courage to admit how they are feeling, they have spoken out as suggested, but where is the backing to all this.
Telling someone who is feeling low and depressed,’Well done, but there is a 6 month waiting list to see Dr Soandso’, is seriously as helpful as a chocolate fireguard. People need help now and funding MUST be put into the services to help this or all the good work done by ‘Mental Health Awareness Day/s’ are wasted.
There, vent over, and yes that did make me feel better, thanks you.
