So, I went for an interview today, which required a lot of preparation as it involved a presentation. I was pushing myself out of my comfort zone, and really tried hard and rehearsed in front of friends, carefully picked my outfit and, as expected, lost sleep over it.
I was sat in the waiting room with five other candidates, four external, one internal, all of use nervously eyeing each other up and down, trying to work out who our competition was.
We were given a tour of the workplace, which took about 30 mins in total. Then each of us had to wait our turn whilst the other candidate did their 20 minute presentation. Once everyone was done, we were shown to a room where we could grab a coffee and wait, but within 10 minutes the lady came back and told us who had been successful. It was the internal candidate.
I don’t want to sound bitter, I’m sure they made the correct choice, but it felt like they knew who they were going to pick all along and had just held the interview out of procedure. Why waste the time on a tour, and make us do the presentation? We didn’t even have an individual interview, so it was purely based on the presentation? I don’t think so? I just felt like I had been duped and that I had wasted a lot of time and energy over a job vacancy that had pretty much be filled prior to the interview.
